My Days is the autobiography of R. K. Narayan, a pioneer Indian writer in English.  The presentation threw light on some interesting facts about the writer and his experiences and friendship with popular figures of the time which helped him in his journey towards becoming a leading writer of his time.

Vagrasika- A Workshop on Book Appreciation

      A one day workshop on book appreciation, 'Vagrasika' was organised by the Book Lovers' Club on September 30, 2015. The English session in the morning was led by the veteran English professor, Dr. C. S. Jayaraman ( Amruta School of Arts and Science) and the Malayalam session in the afternoon was engaged by the popular Malayalam poet, Sri Sreekumar Mukhathala, ( Programme Executive, All India Radio). Around sixty students from degree and postgraduate courses of various departments attended the workshop.

This book is a translation of  Unbowed: A Memoir, the autobiographical work of the African nature activist, Wangari Mathai. The presenter gave a straightforward account of the challenges that Wangari Mathai faced in her journey from a rural Kenyan woman  to a well known figure in the world.

Gleanings from World Literature

A collection of famous opening lines of selected works from World Literature was displayed in colourful charts by the Book Lovers' Club. Each chart contained the essential details of the particular book on the left side and the quote on its right.

I DC Representatives

Chackson Reji was unanimously elected as the I DC representative of the Book Lovers' Club in a meeting held on July 22, 2015. Gincy Maria Varghese was given the charge of collecting articles from I DC students for the Readers' Desk.

Njan Malala - P S Rakesh

Njan Malala written by P. S. Rakesh is the life story of Malala Yousafzai, the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize who fought for the education of girls. The presentation was crisp and meticulous and was appreciated by all.

Marunnu - Punathil Kunjabdulla

Date of Presentation : July 21, 2015
Marunnu, the Malayalam novel written by Punathil Kunjabdulla was the book chosen for presentation by Aiswarya Gigikumar. The unseen world of medicine is the background of the novel. The presenter could effectively bring before the audience the drab life inside hospitals, and the enigma that surrounds its various characters.

Distribution of Reading List 

The conveners of the Book Lovers' Club visited the first year students and distributed a recommended list of 100 books on July 20, 2015. The list contains selected classics from English and Malayalam which students ought to read in the graduation level.

Sarada - O Chandu Menon 

The nineteenth century Malayalam novel, Sarada written by O Chandu Menon the pioneer novelist in Malayalam was presented by Angel M Bejoy of  III BA English on July 14, 2015. The presenter by her lucid Malayalam took the audience on a verbal journey into the life of the protagonist, a girl named Sarada set in the backdrop of nineteenth century Kerala.

Book Presentation

The weekly series of book presentations organised by the Book Lovers' Club for the academic year 2015- '16 was initiated on July 23 by the Secretary of the Club, Saneesh Abraham. The well known Malayalam fiction, Ini Njan Urangatte by P. K. Balakrishnan was the book chosen for presentation. The presenter threw light on the narrator's skill in portraying Karnan as the real hero of Mahabharata. The 20 mts long presentation was highly inspiring and received wonderful feedback from teachers and students alike.

Reading Week Celebrations (June 19- 26)


Poster Making Competition

A Poster Making Competition was organised by the Book Lovers' Club in St. Peter's College in connection with the Reading Week celebrations. Students were given 3 days' time to prepare and submit posters demonstrating the importance of reading. The poster prepared by Donna Augustine of II MA English was adjudged the best poster.

Readers' Desk

With a view to promote reading habit among students, a Readers' Desk was instituted by the Club on Reading Day (June 19) which was inaugurated by the Principal of St. Peter's College, Dr. Thampy Abraham. The Readers' Desk is placed near the Department of English which displays an array of carefully selected newspapers, magazines and informative articles. The Readers' Desk provides an opportunity for students to skim through important news and educative write ups with ease. Sreelakshmi Saju of II BA English is the student in- charge of the Desk.



Reading Competition

A Reading Competition was held on Reading Day at 1.30 pm in the Audio Visual Room. Around 20 students from different departments participated in the competition. Krishnapriya R. of II BA English bagged the First Prize while Anupama Peter and Gayathri J Warrier (III BA English) bagged the Second and Third Prizes respectively.

The Book Lovers' Club was instituted in 2006 by the Department of English, St. Peter's College, Kolenchery with a view to encourage reading habit among students. Every year, two teachers from the Department are entrusted with the supervision of the Club. A body of student coordinators with representatives from all batches organises the activites of the Club. The Club conducts book presentations every week to familiarise students with the varied world of books. The presentation of about 10 minutes is done by a student member of the Club which is followed by a discussion. The Club also organises exhibitions, workshops and seminars in the campus and outside. Competitions are held on book presentations, slogan writing etc ensuring maximum participation from students.
